Shoe-Compartment Gym Bags

A shoe tunnel is an end compartment that opens from the outside and is closed off from the rest of the bag. The reason it earns its place is less obvious than people assume: shoes carry grit, gravel and gym floor dust, and abrasive grit loose in a main compartment is what wears the inside of a bag out.

Odour is the second reason and it only works if the tunnel is vented. An unvented shoe compartment is a sealed box with the worst thing in the bag inside it, which concentrates the problem rather than solving it. Ours are lined in a wipeable coated fabric and vented through mesh at the inner end.

The number nobody quotes is what it costs you. A shoe tunnel takes its volume out of the main compartment, so a bag advertised at a headline capacity can lose a serious share of it to the tunnel. We quote both numbers — the total and the usable main compartment — because otherwise you are comparing two bags on a figure that means different things.

And it should load from the end rather than through the main compartment, or the grit ends up exactly where you were trying to keep it from.
