Almost every bag sold as ventilated has a small mesh panel or a handful of punched eyelets somewhere on one face. Packed and zipped, that panel does essentially nothing, because moving air needs somewhere to enter and somewhere to leave.

Mesh at opposite ends of the bag is what makes the difference. It gives a path through the packed contents rather than a hole in one wall, and a bag that can dry out between sessions is a bag that does not need rescuing with a cleaning routine nobody follows.
