Wet/Dry Gym Bags

The most useful thing on a gym bag is somewhere to put the wet things. Damp kit packed against a dry shirt makes the whole bag damp, and a damp bag zipped shut in a car boot overnight is the entire reason gym bags get replaced.

The catch is that “wet pocket” is a label rather than a specification. On a great many bags it is an ordinary panel pocket cut from the same unlined fabric as the body, with a seam at the top that stops short of the divider. Water runs straight through that seam into the main compartment — which is precisely the thing the pocket was sold to prevent.

A wet compartment that works is separately lined in a coated fabric, seamed all the way up the divider rather than partway, and given its own vent or drain so what goes in wet is not sealed in for two days. We state the lining, the coating and how the divider is seamed on the quote, and we will tell you if a sample you are holding is a panel pocket with a nice label on it.

It also has to be big enough to be used. A pocket that takes a pair of socks is decoration; a wet compartment has to swallow a full set of kit.

How do I tell a real wet compartment from a panel pocket?

Open it and look at the seam where the divider meets the top of the bag. A real wet compartment is separately lined in a coated fabric and seamed the whole way up. A panel pocket is the same fabric as the body and the seam stops short, so anything that pools runs into the main compartment.

Should the wet compartment be waterproof?

It should be water-resistant and it should be able to dry. Fully sealing it is the wrong goal — sealed damp kit is exactly what makes a bag smell. A coated lining that holds a wet towel for the drive home, plus a vent so it dries out afterwards, is the right specification.
